Computers have come a long way from about 60 years ago. From simple dots on your screen, we now have virtual reality games that can be viewed from 21st-century googles. The hardware also has become more sophisticated and sleek than it ever was. The 1960s
Before 1962, there wasn’t anything going for gaming. Three MIT students developed the pioneer computer game: Martin Graetz, Alan Kotok, and Steve Russell. And it was called Spacewar—a game where the players had to destroy each other’s spaceship to win. The computer upon which the game was played did nothing to improve the game players’ gaming experience. The game experience was only improved when HP released their first 16-bit minicomputer.
The 1970s
The 70s saw a much-improved gaming experience, at least compared to the previous decade. It was in this decade that competitive gaming was invented, with people battling for titles over Spacewar. In 1972, Pong was invented. It is a tennis-style sports game that Allan Alcorn created. Originally designed for arcade machines, it was basic in terms of graphics and functionality. It was an instant success. Later in the 70s, text games were invented to communicate with their games via written commands.
The 1980s
In the 80s, the first personal computer was invented, and this was the board upon which gaming was launched into the global arena. This computer was known as the IBM personal computer and was lauded for its speed and sophistication. With this computer, gamers can play games in their homes without it taking too much space. HP released another computer, the HP 9000, which offered the same power as the computers of the previous decade at half the size. The Microsoft Adventure and the Microsoft Flight Simulator made their advent in this decade.
